Writing Contest Rules Change

Sun Nov 19, 2006 @ 03:12PM

FOR THE CURRENT WRITING CONTEST ENTRANTS:

I understand that a few Writing Contest entrants may be upset this contest is taking so long. I am with you. How could it have taken so long to arrive at just 7 entries when 50 entries is the trigger to end the contest, especially when $1000 was up for grabs?

For this reason, I propose two alternatives (you can propose others if you don't like these alternatives):

1. Set in stone an end date of March 1, 2007 for contest entries, in which a $1000 winner would be selected by April 1, 2007.
2. Judge the current entries and pay out the prize on a pro rata basis, meaning that the winner of the current entries would be paid 7/50 ($140) of the $1000 prize and the contest would end. If by the time the votes are all cast 25 entries have been made, then the prize would be $500.

For the rules to change, all contest entrants must reply to this topic with a vote to one or both of my offered alternatives, or to alternatives I may propose as I receive your feedback herein. The first rule to be unanimously voted in by all entrants will be the rule that changes the contest.

Can I suggest that since contest participants have not responded that you should try to promote this contest so to get more people entered. Try craigslist (craigslist.org). I simply found this site when I googled "writing contests." I will also be submitting a story for the contest. Please update on the status of this contest...
Thank you, and vaya con dios.

Dana,

I'm delighted to hear the Contest showed up on a "writing contest" query. This is a taste of good news.

I was diligently promoting The Contest several months ago, but was surprised by the negative feedback, and lack of entries. I now wish I'd offered 10 $100 contests with a set 30-45 day period for making entries. In retrospect, I think this approach to offering prizes would have been more believable. To this $1000 Contest, too many potential entrants likely wondered "What's the catch?" The "catch" was just that I wanted to share my hobby site with as many readers and writers as possible. My hubris. That's it. That's the "catch." I wanted to be popular, to be read, to get lots of hits. I thought $1000 would buy it. And I'm still looking forward to paying the prize out. But how to get 41 more entries?

Craig's List. Dang. I should have thought of that. I'll go post there now. Good idea.

And if anyone out there has any ideas as to where I might post a link to this $1000 Contest, please let me know.

Thanks,

Johnny

Another recommendation - In the contest rules, you may want to give direction on how to submit a story...i.e. register with the site, click on forums, click on post new topic...
I look forward to reading more stories as they roll in!
Good Luck all...

Dana,
Thanks for the recommendation. I added some instruction on how to submit to the contest. Let me know if it is instructive or helpful.

Johnny,

I just found this site and I'm currently working on an entry for the contest. The reason I found it was because I want to write a true story about either my life or what my mother went through before she died. Need some experince in writting. Both are very interesting topics, which will really include both topics. I'm doing this in memory of my Mother. But first is first, I'm starting on a short story now. Great site by the way.

Dana,

How do you download picture, I've tried 3 times and it doesn't seem to want to save it.

Brian,
I'm glad you stopped by.
It seems you have what it takes to write good stories. Just reading your forum comments gives me the impression you can write.
I look forward to hearing your stories.
Just tell them. They'll pour right out. You'll only mess up if you try too hard.
Johnny
